About

Hello … Hallo … Bonjour … Hola … Salaam … Ciao!

My name is Leah, the.insulin.type on Instagram. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 14, just before my 15th birthday. I’m the only one in my family and immediate friend circle to have T1D. I created my Instagram and blog in order to find deeper accountability, connect with others like me, and to spread awareness for diabetes. More details on why I blog about diabetes can be found here.

An A1C in the 7%+ range used to be normal for me – for nearly 11 years. I knew there had to be an easier way and I was SO frustrated! I was doing everything my doctor told me to do, but with the same poor results. In 2015, I saw another type 1 on Instagram posting about low carb and her blood sugars were fantastic! I tried my best to mimic her, and I’ve since immersed myself in learning about low carb. I have been following a low carb lifestyle ever since. During my pregnancy I continued to eat low carb and maintained an A1C between 4.5-4.9%. If someone would have told me a few years ago that achieving normal blood sugars was possible, I would have laughed in their face and probably gotten angry. But I am here to tell you ACHIEVING NORMAL BLOOD SUGARS IS POSSIBLE!

I’m also passionate about #insulin4all – I believe everyone with diabetes, no matter the type, deserves access to affordable insulin and diabetes supplies, like in Germany, where insulin is 7x cheaper than in the US.

I’m also super proud to say that I created the Happy Diabetic Challenge, which was originally started to create a positive outlook, raise awareness, and provide inclusion for the diabetes online community.

When I’m not thinking about what my blood sugar is doing, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our two girls, reading, playing and watching sports, and of course, traveling.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Hi Leah,
I´m Lada-type, too. Last saturday I was at the hypobarcamp in Frankfurt and as I talked to a woman about eating lowcarb she told me that she knew about you. I´m very, very pleased to find someone doing the same. Everybody looks strange, when I tell about LC and diabetes. I was diagnosed in May this year more ore less accidentally. One year before my doc told me that I would be prediabetic type 2. I wondered why my Hba1c reduced under LC “only” from 6,1 to 5,8. The blood test at a specialised doc showed type 1. Right now I don´t need insuline. If I ate more carb food it would be definetely different… As I understood the only insuline you need is a long running one. Perhaps you could tell me what you are careing for specially, fats, proteins to stay healthy… as you are surely more experienced. Perhaps you know other Ladas like me?
I hope you are fine and feel good! 🙂
