Coffee and Pregnancy ☕️ ⠀ ⠀ My only pregnancy food aversion (so far) was coffee. I couldn’t drink any for the first 16-18 weeks of pregnancy. I didn’t even like the SMELL of it 👃 And I used to be an avid espresso drinker. ⠀ ⠀ Thankfully that craving has slowly entered my life again. And don’t worry, I only have 1 espresso per day (OK sometimes 2). I’m sure there are pregnancy police on here, so just covering my bases. 🤭 ⠀ ⠀ My coffee preferences have changed a lot throughout the years. Probably 5+ years ago, I could only drink coffee with LOTS of creamer, to the point where it was basically just drinking sugar (terrible for blood sugars). Then I moved to Germany, where coffee creamer is not a thing. So I started drinking it with milk or kaffeesahne. I realized that I should just try and drink it black, instead of having to deal with crazy blood sugars! It was while I was living in Germany that I realized how freakin delicious espresso is. I have an espresso machine at home and it is honestly the most used appliance in my kitchen ☕️ My espresso machine is from @delonghi.na if you’re looking for a good one! ⠀ ⠀ I wish I would have tried weaning off of creamer a LONG time ago, but such is life. It’s so much easier on blood sugars to drink black coffee, and it’s honestly delicious once you acquire the taste. You can actually TASTE coffee and the different notes each kind has. Crunch, crunch, crunch 💥 @questnutrition chips are so crunchy and flavorful, you won’t even realize they’re not loaded with carbs. But you will because I bet your blood sugar won’t spike (mine doesn’t) 💪⠀ ⠀ Have you tried their chips? They have two sorts: tortilla style and original. ⠀ ⠀ My fav tortilla style is loaded taco (which is perfect for making taco in a bag)!⠀ ⠀ And my fav original style is BBQ. Quest recently made some changes to the original flavors and the BBQ is even better than before.⠀ ⠀ Overall, I do prefer the tortilla style. FAV low carb breakfast option here ⬆️⬆️⬆️⠀ ⠀ Lately, this n’oatmeal has been my go-to breakfast. It’s full of healthy fats, fiber, and protein AND it’s absolutely delicious. Perfect for a #t1dpregnancy 👍 low carb and full of nutrients! Recipe is from my fellow MN girls @kuwtketodashians! 22 week bumpdate! 👶 ⠀ ⠀ I‘ve been feeling really great this entire pregnancy, and I sure hope it stays this way. ⠀ ⠀ I never had any nausea or vomiting, or anything crazy like that. I felt the first flutters at 16 weeks and first real kicks around 18. My husband could feel her kicking at 20 weeks. Since then, I‘ve felt her every single day and it‘s been an incredible experience to realize that she already has a schedule. I know when she‘ll be active throughout the day. 💃 ⠀ ⠀ Some not-so-glamorous sides of pregnancy so far: hormonal pregnancy acne hit me HARD during the first 18 weeks of pregnancy, it’s getting hard to put my shoes on and tie them, I think I might outgrow my winter coat (which is absolutely necessary to have for #minnesota winters), I haven’t slept through the night for a few months because I always have to get up and pee or switch sleeping positions, etc etc. 🙄⠀ ⠀ It’s beautiful knowing that my body is growing another human but at the same time it can be hard to suppress the fear and anxiety of my changing body and what’s yet to come. I’ve been the same size practically my entire life, and now I’m 10 pounds heavier. The body image side of pregnancy is something that I’m working on each day. ⭐️⭐️⠀ ⠀ Apart from that, I’ve been eating low carb this entire pregnancy to help manage my diabetes. My last A1C was 4.7% which I am really happy with! Planning for pregnancy is extra helpful if you have #type1diabetes like I do 👶 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Before I started to think about the impacts of my diabetes on getting pregnant, I wanted and needed to understand my body much deeper than I was ever taught. This book was recommended by many women and after doing a bit of research, I decided to buy Beyond the Pill by @drjolenebrighten. (This is not sponsored!) 📖 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was on the pill for a long time without ever really questioning it or asking myself what the consequences and side effects could be. When I started doing more research, it infuriated me. No one told me that the pill depleted certain nutrients and that I should have been taking a prenatal while on it. No one told me that the “period” you get on the pill is not even a period at all. No one told me that discharge is normal and can help track where you’re at in your cycle. No one told me ...far too many things that should be taught to young women. ‼️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At age 27, I was finally learning more about my body. I felt cheated, but I also felt SUPER empowered by what Dr. Brighten was sharing and teaching. I felt like I was finally understanding my body and what it does each month, and also what it is capable of doing. This book gave me to tools to heal after so many years on the pill. 💊 Although MOST of my pregnancy planning revolved around #diabetes (which I’ll post about later), I would 100% recommend all women pick up this book and read through it whether planning a pregnancy or not. So this is why I’ve been a bit quiet on instagram lately! It’s been incredibly hard not to share all of the details through the first 20 weeks, but I’m looking forward to sharing my #t1dpregnancy journey with all of you. Our little #insulin4all baby girl will be here by the end of May! 💐⠀ ⠀ Any questions, I’m happy to answer them, but read this first ⬇️⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Implantation: OMG I should have KNOWN I was pregnant before I even took the test. I had a weekend a few days past ovulation where my sugars were resistant and elevated. I was in the 150-160s for about a day and a half which is HIGH AF for me. ⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 4: POSITIVE pregnancy test⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 5: My preconception A1C was 5.2%⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 6: First endo appointment. And of course I discussed with my doc that I would be continuing to eat low carb during the entire pregnancy, which she fully supports. I was given targets of: fasting 60-90, one hour after meal <130, and two hours after meal <120. ⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 8: first OB appointment and confirmed heartbeat ❤️ ⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 12: A1C was 4.9%⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Weeks 5-16: EXTREME FATIGUE 😴 ⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 16: first increase in basal insulin for the evening and A1C of 4.7%⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ Week 20: anatomy scan with MFM doctor which confirmed it’s a GIRL. She’s healthy and growing on track, 11oz and in the 39th percentile. 💪 I’ll share more about this appt in another post! ⠀ ⠀ Honest, I have been incredibly lucky. Besides extreme fatigue (which was honestly debilitating), I didn’t have any other symptoms. No nausea, no vomiting, nothing (sorry ladies). My blood sugars have been phenomenal and honestly easy to manage so far. I directly attribute this to eating REAL food: fibrous vegetables, lots of protein and healthy fats. ⠀ ⠀ Overall, I haven’t had many insulin changes YET. 💉 I am a bit more resistant with evening meals, but other than that, everything is the same. I’m probably weird because this is not typically the case; although, I do expect my insulin needs to start changing soon. ⠀ ⠀ I’m sure I forgot lots of details, so I’ll try and do more posts in the coming days. RANT POST⠀ ⠀ I got a new insulin pump in October from Medtronic, the 670g (pump only). The last pump that I had from Medtronic USA was in 2012. I did have one from Medtronic Germany in 2015, but Medtronic USA would not support the insulin pump with consumables or anything else. I was forced to get a new pump. But that's not what I'm upset about (I mean, I am, but that's not the point of this post). ⠀ ⠀ When I opened the huge package, there was the insulin pump, the connecting meter, quick set infusion sets, and reservoirs. ⠀ ⠀ Guess what WASN'T included? The freakin' inserter for the quick sets. ⠀ ⠀ HELLO?! How do you insert the quick set without an inserter? ⠀ ⠀ On top of that, the entire order cost more than a used car for most people. The least that Medtronic could do is send the inserter, but they didn't: Pharma$$$ at its finest.⠀ ⠀ So I called them, and they wanted to charge me over $26 for an inserter. I said no way. It should be included. So they sent me to another customer service representative and he told me this: ⠀ ⠀ Typically they only send an inserter once per customer, or roughly every 5 years. Obviously I met this criteria as my last pump was from 2012. And I told them that the pump from Germany was completely ignored as being valid in the USA, so they can't pick and choose their criteria. He agreed.⠀ ⠀ At one point, I did ask the rep if he would like to insert the quick set manually? LOL it was quite the response. "It can be manually inserted". Yeah, but would you like to? "To be honest, no". OK THEN. ⠀ ⠀ And did you know that Medtronic asks all workers to try and wear the devices that they are supporting? Yep. So they know that it's terrible to manually insert; they've had to do it themselves. ⠀ ⠀ Nevertheless, Medtronic did send me a new inserter. So thanks for that. ⠀ ⠀ Basically this is a POO on the big healthcare industry. It sucks in the USA. It’s #nationalketoday! I thought I’d share my fav keto snack + tips on reading ingredient labels. ⠀ ⠀ @questnutrition cookies are bomb 💣. In fact, their cookies are my go-to low carb snack. They’re packed with protein (15g), fiber (9-12g) and only have about 5g of carbs (that raise blood sugar). ⠀ ⠀ 👍 Ingredients like stevia, sucralose, allulose, monkfruit, and erythritol won’t raise blood sugar. ⠀ ⠀ 👎 Many other companies claim to be “keto” or “diabetic friendly”, but in reality, they use nasty ingredients that raise blood sugar like malitol and xylitol.
