Hello … Hallo … Bonjour … Hola … Salaam … Ciao!

My name is Leah, the.insulin.type on Instagram. I’m 27 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 14, just before my 15th birthday. I’m the only one in my family and immediate friend circle to have T1D. I created my Instagram and blog in order to find deeper accountability, connect with others like me, and to spread awareness for T1D. More details on why I blog about diabetes can be found here.

An A1C in the 7%+ range used to be normal for me – for nearly 11 years. I knew there had to be an easier way and I was SO frustrated! I was doing everything my doctor told me to do, but with the same poor results. Then, I saw another type 1 on Instagram posting about low carb and her blood sugars were fantastic! I tried my best to mimic her, and I’ve since immersed myself in learning about low carb. I have been following a low carb lifestyle ever since (my A1C is now 5.2% and getting lower). If someone would have told me a few years ago that achieving normal blood sugars was possible, I would have laughed in their face and probably gotten angry. But I am here to tell you ACHIEVING NORMAL BLOOD SUGARS IS POSSIBLE!

I’m also passionate about #insulin4all and advocate with @MNinsulin4all. Since moving back to Minnesota from Germany, where insulin is 7x cheaper, I am outraged at the state of the US healthcare system. Actually, I considered NOT moving back home because of the healthcare disaster and literally having to worry about access and affordability of insulin – which I need to live. Our stories matter. Check out T1International to see if there is a state chapter near you.

I’m also super proud to say that I created the Happy Diabetic Challenge, which aims to spread POSITIVE awareness for people with diabetes. Search for #happydiabeticchallenge on Instagram.

Germany was my home for three years and I just recently moved back to my home state of Minnesota, brrrr! When I’m not thinking about what my blood sugar is doing, I enjoy spending time with my husband, reading, playing and watching sports, and of course, travelling.

Thanks for reading!
